Giant Christmas lantern attracts visitors in Laoag City

LAOAG CITY—The 100-year-old Ilocos Norte Capitol building is a regular stop for private vehicles and tourist buses as visitors wanted to have a closer look at the model of beauty and architecture in the entire province.

On Monday night, the number has more than doubled as a giant Christmas lantern started to illuminate an installation that resembles the facade of Paoay Church, a UNESCO-world heritage site.

Inspired by a touch of Ilocano culture, the “belen” (nativity scene) is decorated with Ilocano products like the “abel”, Paoay’s indigenous fabric.

“Here’s our present for all Filipinos around the world! There is nothing more special than Christmas here at home so we always try to keep the spirit of the season with inspired decors and activities,” said Provincial Tourism Officer Aianree Raquel following the ceremonial light up on Monday evening.

This year, the “Paskuami Ditoy” Capitol Installation is inspired by the majesty of Paoay Church. The traditional creche is housed in a three-story metal structure where visitors can take photos and have a different view of the Capitol building and its surroundings.

A giant Christmas tree is also placed beside the installation, where 200 lanterns made by inmates at the Ilocos Norte Provincial Jail were displayed as accessories.

At the Laoag City hall, glimmering holiday trees and city lights have been attracting a sea of people at night.

The well-lit Aurora Park is also becoming a favorite hangout of family and friends, spending quality time together with more installations that reminds everyone that the best season of the year has come.

In the coming days, Raquel said other installations will be added to engage people to rest and experience the Capitol complex.

“We will also have weekly mini concerts featuring three of the best choirs in the province,” he said.
