Globe preps disaster assistance for communities around Mt. Pinatubo

Globe is on standby for disaster assistance for communities surrounding Mt. Pinatubo in case of high seismic activity and other volcanic hazards.  According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), they recorded a phreatic eruption at the volcano last Tuesday (Nov. 30), which led them to advise residents to remain on alert and exercise caution over the coming days.

A phreatic eruption occurs when water is heated by magma, lava, hot rocks, or new volcanic deposits. The intense heat may cause it to boil and generate an explosion of steam, water, ash, blocks, and bombs.

Although the volcanic activity is relatively weak, Globe has already placed its Libreng Tawag, Charging, and WiFi (LTLCW) services on standby.  The services will be deployed immediately in evacuation centers once needed.

Globe gave assurance that its technical and support personnel are on call for any emergency.  Its standby generators are also ready for use by its facilities to ensure that communications services remain up.

Likewise, Globe echoed Phivolcs’ reminder for everyone to be prepared for “shallow phreatic or hydrothermal explosions such as the event of today can occur without warning.”

The company advised affected residents to stay indoors unless required to evacuate, and store enough food and water, prepare face masks, first aid kits, and extra batteries for their flashlights, and charge their mobile phones.

Globe is also providing its customers with free data access to Phivolcs’ website  and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council official online portal for updates on the volcano’s activity. The company appealed to the public to stay vigilant and only subscribe to legitimate and trusted sources for correct information.
