‘Good turnout’ at start of voters registration: Comelec

MANILA — A good number of applications for registration particularly from the National Capital Region (NCR) has been recorded during the first week of the ongoing voters registration, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Tuesday.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez reported that an average of 150-200 people have submitted applications for registration in Metro Manila.

“Across various registration centers in Metro Manila, the daily total averaged to 150-200 applications for registration,” he said in a statement.

Jimenez noted that based on the number, the people are still interested in participating in the forthcoming electoral exercises in the country.

“The first week of registration showed that the public remains very interested in participating in elections,” he said.

“While these applications have yet to be screened by the Electoral Registration Board, as required by law, we can be confident that a significant number of new voters will be added to the rolls, in time for the 2018 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections,” Jimenez added.

He said people also responded to their call to make use of the three-day holiday in connection with the holding of the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in the NCR this week.

“During these “ASEAN holidays” various Comelec offices have embarked on satellite registration in order to bring the process closer to the people,” he said.

“This has, to a great extent, been welcomed by the public and our satellite registration events continue to process substantial numbers of applications on a daily basis,” Jimenez added.

The voter registration started last November 6 and will run until November 30. (PNA)
