Halal chicken factory to rise in Maguindanao

BULUAN, Maguindanao — Local officials here are set to inaugurate the first-ever “pure” halal dressed chicken factory being built in this provincial capital town.

Maguindanao Boardmember Jazzer Mangudadatu said the halal dressed chicken production area will be the first of its kind in Maguindanao, in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and probably in the country.

The provincial lawmaker toured local journalists to the factory site on Sunday. He said the facility is expected to be completed before the end of this year and to be inaugurated in February to coincide with the 3rd “Inaul” (Muslim Woven Cloth) Festival.

Once operational, the young Mangudadatu said the factory could process an average of 30,000 pieces of dressed chicken daily.

Foreign investors partnered with the Mangudadatu political clan of Maguindanao in establishing the factory to ensure halal chicken supplies are available in the local and regional markets.

National “halal” industry consultant Sani Macabalang said the production of pure halal chicken involves not only the slaughter of chicken according to Islamic tradition, but also the raising of chicken according to halal standards.

According to Mangudadatu, dressed chicken in the market today may have been slaughtered according to Islamic tradition but uncertain how they were raised.

The project is a joint venture between local traders and Malaysian investors who see chicken production the halal way as a means of ensuring dressed chicken in the market are safe and permissible to Islamic law. (Edwin Fernandez/PNA)
