Ham price increase due to ASF

The prices of Christmas ham has increased this holiday season.

According to the Department of Agriculture (DA), the rise in cost amounting to at least ₱40 for each variety of ham is driven by the reduction in pork supply due to the African Swine Fever (ASF).

The famous Chinese sliced ham can be bought at ₱1,400 to ₱1,540 per kilo and a deboned ham at ₱1,340 from a store in the metro. The pineapple ham is priced at ₱1,040 while the American sweet ham is valued at ₱800.

Some buyers have shrugged off the adjustment in prices but others have resorted to cheaper hams which cost ₱299 per kilo.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has maintained the suggested retail price of ham from last year but some small store owners have initiated to sell it beyond the SRP. – Report from Cleizl Pardilla
