LOS BAÑOS, Laguna – Some 29 participants composed of researchers, technical staff, and private practitioners/stakeholders from state universities and colleges (SUCs), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Regional Fisheries Offices and the private sector undertook their training on shrimp health management.

The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD)  spearheaded the training recently at its Innovation and Technology Center (DPITC) in this town.

Organized by the Inland Aquatic Resources Research Division (IARRD), in coordination with the University of Santo Tomas (UST), the training updated participants on current trends in shrimp health management as well as technologies for disease detection.

UST Professor Dr. Mary Beth B. Maningas trained the participants on the current trends in health management and molecular tools for detection of pathogens in shrimp culture through lecture and workshop exercises in the DPITC laboratories.

Maningas and her technical staff also provided participants with hands-on training and workshop on the use of Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) Kit.

Dr. Melvin B. Carlos, PCAARRD Deputy Executive Director officer-in-charge for Administration Resource Management and Support Services (ARMSS), expounded that Council, more than a research and development (R&D) funding agency, also bridges the technology developer and the end-users to level off expectations until the product is ready for roll-out. (Saul Pa-a/PNA)
