Ilocos-based broadcasters back DENR’s national greening program

LAOAG CITY, July 29 — About 500 saplings of narra and mahogany were planted in the mountainous village of Bacsil, Dingras town on Saturday.

Amid stormy weather, members of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas-Ilocos Norte Chapter along with the Pinakbet Group, an active non-government organization here and the representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, climbed up the hilly portion of the area to plant more trees.

Now on its seventh year, the “Oplan Broadcastreeing” program of the KBP has been reaching out to the different towns and cities of the province to advocate the planting of more trees in support to the national greening program of the national government.

According to Celestina Paz, president of the KBP-Ilocos Norte Chapter, the continuing program hopes to inspire residents to take good care of the environment and prevent the impact of climate change.

Since 2011, the simultaneous nationwide implementation of the “Oplan Broadcastreeing Project” is in accordance with a Memorandum of Agreement signed between the Department of Interior and Local Government and the KBP, and has since been done in coordination with the DENR.

Over the last five years, the DENR-Ilocos Norte has planted over 12 million seedlings in the mountainous part of the province covering some 21 hectares mostly in the towns of Vintar, Nueva Era and Piddig that forms part of the so-called ‘green wall’ of Ilocos Norte.

After tree planting, the DENR continues to monitor these trees in cooperation with host communities for post-evaluation. (LGA/PNA)
