Ilocos Norte records P56.5-M infra damage due to ‘habagat’

LAOAG CITY — The province of Ilocos Norte experienced severe effect of the southwest monsoon with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) recording an estimated damage of PHP56.5 million in infrastructure.

Based on initial report, Marcell Tabije of the PDRRMC said Wednesday several flood control dikes, a seawall and portions of roads and bridges including a small water impounding project in low-lying areas of the province were eroded and damaged due to intermittent rains since Saturday.

In Barangay Baresbes, Dingras town, a flood control dike was eroded, with an estimated repair cost of PHP25 million, according to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The wing wall of a small bridge in Sitio Mapikon, also in the same village, was also eroded. A 27.70-linear meter seawall in Sitio Bago, Barangay Caruan, Pasuquin town, was also washed out including some 200-cubic meter embankment materials.

In Mabusag Sur village in Badoc town, a house made of light weight materials was partially damaged when a slope protection of a road was eroded. The incident affected eight persons though no one was hurt.

“So far, we are still awaiting reports from other municipalities,” said Tabije as he reported the PDRRMC has assisted 132 persons who were preemptively evacuated on Tuesday in Caruan, Pasuquin and in Mabusag Sur, Badoc.

As of this posting, the extent of damage in agriculture has yet to be ascertained as extension workers from the agriculture department are still evaluating the rice fields.

As of this posting, the weather condition has improved in the province though landline and internet services have been observed to be slower than usual. (Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
