Ilocos Norte town mayor gets 1-month suspension

LAOAG CITY — The Office of the Ombudsman has ordered the suspension for one month of the mayor of Solsona town in Ilocos Norte province due to simple negligence.

Mayor Alex Calucag’s suspension stemmed from a complaint against him by former town councilor, Samuel Balantac, for violating the implementing rules and regulations of the Government Procurement Reform Act.

Calucag was found guilty when he awarded to a non-compliant bidder the purchase of medicines in July 2017.

In a radio interview, Calucag said he respects the decision but he is set to make an appeal in court.

“I accept the decision. In fact, I am happy about it. Perhaps, it’s giving me a sign,” he said.

The decision of the Ombudsman was served at the Office of the Mayor on June 4.

The mayor was given at least five days from receipt to file a motion for reconsideration. (Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
