Ilocos Norte townsfolk start movement vs. plastic pollution

LAOAG CITY — In time for the celebration of world environment month, the Barangay Ecological Solid Waste Management Council and the Barangay Council of Poblacion in Burgos, Ilocos Norte have prepared a series of activities this June to beat plastic pollution.

To kick-off the month-long event, over a hundred participants joined a clean-up drive at the Kapurpurawan Rocks Formation on Tuesday and collected about 128 kilos of plastic bottles and mixed waste plastic cups and plastic bags.

Led by Poblacion village chief Joegie Jimenez, along with the management and staff of the Burgos wind power farm, Barangay health workers, Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries, and the Bureau of Fire Protection, a motorcade will be conducted on Friday, June 8, to strengthen awareness on the environment month celebration.

There will also be installation of signages and trimming of bougainvillea plants along the highway.

At the public market and schools, Jimenez said they will be conducting massive information and dissemination drive about solid waste management on June 11.

This will be followed by a benchmarking trip to Cavite, particularly in Imus and Bacoor, and in Quezon City, to learn their best practices on proper segregation, collection of waste, and operation of a material recovery facility.

“It is not yet too late to save mother earth,” Jimenez said, as he enjoined his constituents and all concerned stakeholders to become responsible stewards of nature.

As a way of encouraging people to practice the 3Rs or the so-called “reuse, reduce, and recycle”, the local government unit of Barangay Poblacion is among the best models in using garbage receptacles made of plastic bottles.

Aside from the continuous clean-up activities on inland bodies of water and in areas being frequented by tourists, Jimenez added that they are also planning to establish a community-based nursery, vermi-composting project and organic vegetable garden, in partnership with the Diocese of Laoag. (Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
