ILOILO CITY — Some 33 Ilonggo students were honored on Monday by the city government for winning in Mathematics competitions abroad.

The students were trained under the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) Philippines and bagged awards in the International Mathematics Competition and “Speak!” International Competition in 2017 and 2018.

Jonathan Glorial, a faculty of West Visayas State University (WVSU) and MTG center coordinator, said the students excelled in the International Mathematics Wizard Challenge in Jakarta, Indonesia; Olympics Mathematics 3D Cup Pan Asia Asia Pacific International Competition 2018 in Hong Kong, China; International Mathematics Contest in Singapore; The Bulgaria International Mathematics Competition in Burgas, Bulgaria; China Primary Math Olympiad in Hang Zhou, Zhejiang Province, China; Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad in Bangkok, Thailand; Speak! International Competition in Singapore and Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad in Hong Kong.

The delegates bagged 30 medals composed of four gold, 11 silver and 15 bronze; six merit awards and one excellence prize in categories they represented.

The students received a medal and plaque of appreciation from the city government.

“This shows that our medium of instruction is at par with the teaching all over the world,” Iloilo City Mayor Jose Espinosa III said in an interview.

The delegates were from Ateneo de Iloilo-Sta. Maria Catholic School; Iloilo Scholastic Academy; SPED-Integrated School for Exceptional Children; Iloilo Scholastic Academy; Hua Siong College of Iloilo; PAREF Westbridge School; Assumption Iloilo; and Philippine Science High School.

Espinosa expressed hope that more students coming from public schools can also compete, saying that most of the winners came from private schools. He admitted there are limitations as far as the city’s provision of assistance is concerned.

“We can only extend financial support if it’s a local event,” he said.

The city government, through its school board fund, is efficient in providing public schools with training, he said.
