ILOILO CITY — Iloilo’s Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro) has encouraged locals to manage their trash by exchanging plastic wastes for reusable items.
The “#BoteKoIpalitKo” Program was launched last year to serve as an immediate solution to the present situation on trash by reducing plastics in the waste stream, Mitzi Peñaflorida, senior environmental management specialist of Penro, said.
Under the program, Ilonggos are encouraged to put all low-density plastics or residual plastics inside a bottle. The plastic bottles filled with residual wastes can be exchanged with eco-bottles and eco-bags.
Peñaflorida called on Ilonggos to participate in the program that opens the Philippine Environment Month in a mall in this city on Saturday.
“This Saturday, we will launch a booth at Robinson’s Place, Iloilo city proper wherein Ilonggos can redeem their rewards in managing their plastic wastes,” she said in an interview on Friday.
“Seven pieces of one-liter plastic bottles filled with residual waste will be exchanged with an eco-bottle, while five pieces of one-liter plastic bottles filled with residual waste equate to one eco-bag,” she added.
Peñaflorida said Ilonggos can also exchange their wastes with these items at the Penro office, 5th floor of the Iloilo Provincial Capitol.
Meanwhile, Penro’s 4K Program or the “Kahublagan Para sa Kabukiran, Kapatagan, and Kadagatan” (Action for the Mountain, Plains, and Seas) will also be launched on Saturday.
“The 4K Program is an approach wherein we call the attention — from the children to whatever ages — to value the proper way to develop our upland communities, forests, lowland communities, and coastal areas,” she said.
