‘In Certain Conversations’: mothers write and talk about the COVID crisis

Amidst the pandemic, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) through its Intertextual Division, Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines-Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights (IPOPHL BCRR), and Philippine PEN continue to uphold their appreciation of the artistry of women writers through “In Certain Conversations” online on Nov. 23.

IPOPHL’s 1st Philippine International Copyright Summit (PICS) will host this segment that will center on the topic of writing and creating literature through the lens of Filipino mothers.

There will also be discussions on copyright and how the book In Certain Seasons: Mothers Write in the Time of COVID, published as an e-book in January this year by CCP and Philippine PEN, came to be.

In Certain Seasons… is a compilation of writings of Filipino mothers during the time of the pandemic, from poetry to short stories. The rampancy of Filipino male writers publishing books during the pandemic had shed light on the lack of published female writers at the time. This book came to life with the beautiful works of talented Filipino mother-writers and artists, with the idea of honoring their stories and sharing them with the world.

Jenny Ortuoste and Che Sarigumba, both journalists and creative writers, respectively edited the English and Filipino works for the book. They will moderate the “In Certain Conversations” segment at PICS.

Their guest speakers are four writers from the 40 who contributed to the book — Lalaine Yanilla Aquino, Alma Anonas-Carpio, Adelle Chua, and Maricel Padua Lopez — who will share their experiences during the pandemic that range from living in isolation from their families to the struggles of being a single mother.

Following their talks is a discussion on copyright and intellectual property, under the guidance of a woman in law who is an expert in this field.
