Indonesia holds food fest to raise donations for Marawi

MANILA — As the Jakarta and Manila maintain “good” bilateral ties, the Embassy of Indonesia in the Philippines on Friday held the “One Day Exquisite Indonesian Food Festival 2017” to promote their local cuisine and at the same time raise revenues to be donated to internally displaced persons (IDP) in Marawi City.

“We would like to give the donation through Philippine Red Cross. This (event) is good for us and for everyone here because it’s not only promoting our culture but also strengthening our people-to-people context,” Trini Gunarti, minister counselor for the embassy said.

For assistance on the rehabilitation of the war-ravaged city, Gunarti affirmed that Indonesia is always ready to extend help should the country asks for it.

In an interview, she explained there is no information yet whether the Philippine side has already sought their government’s hands.

“I’m sure if the Philippine government asks Indonesia, we are ready to help, that is our commitment,” she assured.

Apart from IDP beneficiaries, Gunarti said part of the gains will also be donated to charity institution, Hospicio de San Jose.

The program showcased 11 Indonesian restaurants and caterers, a number of cultural performances as well as a fashion show during the evening.

Since it is a part fundraiser and part cultural event, Gunarti bared the program actually aims to “attract more Filipinos” to come and taste dishes in Indonesia.

Of the two nations’ relations in tourism, Gunart said: “It’s never been better, it’s always good.”

“We always encourage Filipinos to come to our country and see what’s going on in there, and see the beauty of Indonesia,” she said. (Joyce Ann L. Rocamora/PNA)
