Investigators retrace activities of slain cop in Cebu

CEBU CITY — Police investigators are backtracking the activities of a slain policeman before he was ambushed Tuesday by unidentified assailants near the Plaza Independencia here.

Supt. Ryan Devaras, chief of the Investigation and Detective Management Branch (IDMB) of Cebu City police, said in a press conference on Wednesday that they are looking into the past activities of PO2 Kenneth Pogoy, who was shot at close range by his attackers shortly after coming from a court hearing concerning a drug case.

Devaras also said they have already coordinated with the Marawi City Police Station, where Pogoy was currently assigned, to gather more information on the victim’s latest activities.

The 34-year-old Pogoy was formerly a member of the Pari-an Police Station here in Cebu City, but was transferred to Marawi City in August 2016 after President Rodrigo R. Duterte bared the names of police officers allegedly involved in illegal drugs.

Pogoy was gunned down aboard his motorcycle before noon Tuesday while the traffic light was on stop signal along M.J. Cuenco Avenue.

The victim was in uniform as he attended a drug case hearing at the Cebu City Hall of Justice before the attack.

Investigators believe Pogoy was able to fire back at his assailants as a slug from his .9mm service firearm was also recovered at the crime scene along with several empty shells of .45-caliber handgun.
Aside from the drug angle, Devaras said the killing could also be work-related or personal grudge.

A civilian, Edward Hinampas, was also hit by a stray bullet during the shooting. (PNA)
