Join ‘Brigada Eskwela’ in Marawi: DepEd

MANILA — Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones enjoined the public to participate in the “Brigada Eskwela sa Marawi” slated December 13-15.

“I ask for everybody’s support and participation in this rebuilding effort,” she said.

“Brigada Eskwela” is DepEd’s program that aims to promote volunteerism, and prepare schools for the opening of classes.

Volunteers of “Brigada Eskwela” work together in cleaning, repairing schools’ facilities, painting, tree planting, among others.

The Marawi conflict completely destroyed 29 schools, she said adding that 47 schools need repairs.

Briones said the military has already given the green light to start the “Brigada Eskwela”.

As she welcomes everyone to help bring back normalcy in the lives of children of Marawi City, Briones called on partners to adopt a school in Marawi City.

Private companies as well as local government units are encouraged to be DepEd’s partners in rebuilding the schools.

Under the partnership, DepEd would proposed the design and will be in charge of the costing aspect.

An estimated PHP1.16 million to PHP2 billion is needed to rebuild the 29 totally damaged schools.

Temporary learning spaces will be built while the damaged schools are being repaired, Briones added. (PNA)
