Kalayaan College ceases operations

Kalayaan College (KC), which was founded by professors from the University of the Philippines, announced it will cease operations after 22 years.

Citing “continuing financial losses” brought about by declining student population and challenges caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, KC President Ma. Olivia Domingo announced the school’s closure in a statement dated July 4.

“The decision will become final after ratification by the majority of the stockholders. KC has informed the Commission on Higher Education of this decision and will abide by whatever requirements the regulatory body shall advise to comply with,” Domingo said.

During the transition period, Domingo said KC will still offer a limited number of General Education and major courses that will “enable senior-level students with a few remaining courses to complete their respective degree programs.”

The school will also allow senior students whose remaining courses are not going to be offered by KC to cross-register in other schools “to enable them to complete their degree programs.”

“The Board apologizes for this short notice and extends its gratitude to all students and parents who put their trust in Kalayaan College,” she added.

Domingo said all classes will be online and will be offered starting August.

KC, located in New Manila, Quezon City, was founded in 2000 by UP professors, led by late UP President Jose V. Abueva. – ag
