Labor group lauds Duterte for ‘honesty’ on EO limitation

MANILA– A labor organization on Wednesday lauded the honesty of President Rodrigo R. Duterte on the limitation of his power with regards to the issue of an Executive Order (EO) that will totally stop contractualization.

Alan Tanjusay, Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) spokesperson, also welcomed the order of the chief executive to certify as urgent the passage of the Security of Tenure (SOT) Bill by Congress. The proposed measure is pending at the Senate.

“Nevertheless, we welcome his frank admission as to the limitation of his authority to issue an EO that will curb epidemic scale of abusive contractualization and his directive to certify the Security of Tenure (SOT) Bill as urgent,” he said in a statement issued a day after the President signed the EO against illegal contractualization.

Tanjusay said he is hopeful that lawmakers will support and fight for the rights of the workers.

“We hope the Senate will be very sympathetic to the plight of abused or exploited workers and not be influenced by unscrupulous employers or businessmen,” he added.

On Tuesday, Labor Day, Duterte signed the EO against illegal contractualization.

For his part, Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III thanked the President for fulfilling his commitment to Filipino workers.

“His gesture is a heartening gift to the workers on Labor Day. The signing by President Duterte of the EO spells clearly the policy of his government to fully end illegal contracting and subcontracting practices,” he added. (PNA)
