Lawmaker calls on UP regent to resign

MANILA — A partylist lawmaker is calling for the resignation of University of the Philippines (UP) Board of Regents member Frederick ‘Spocky’ Farolan over his controversial comments on social media against critics who slammed the delayed release of UP College Admission Test (UPCAT) results.

In a statement on Monday, 1-Care Rep. Carlos Roman Uybarreta hit Farolan for his “ingrates” and “entitled millennials” remarks targeting over 82,000 test takers.

“Many of my young kababayans in Bicol are among the over 80,000 high school graduates who took the UPCAT Results and whom UP Regent Frederick Mikhail Farolan targeted in his now viral social media post,” Uybarreta said.

Uybarreta stressed that service to the Filipino people “with utmost responsibility” is the standard of public service that the Constitution requires of Farolan as a member of the highest governing body of the country’s premier state university.

“The honorable exit for you is to become a private citizen. It seems like you need a respite from the strenuous requirements of public service,” Uybarreta said.

Farolan had earlier announced on his Facebook page that UPCAT results would be released on April 30.

Farolan’s post, however, drew criticisms over the delay in release of UPCAT results, which were expected to be out by the end of March or the first week of April.

The UP board member responded to the backlash about the delay via his Facebook post.

“Forgive me for saying this…pero ‘yung mga kung makahirit e parang hulog ng Diyos kayo para sa UP, siguraduhin ‘nyo lang na papasa kayo ng UPCAT. Dahil kung hindi, lalaitin ko pati kaibuturan ng kaluluwa niyo (Forgive me for saying this… but to those who chide us as if they’re godsent, [you] have to guarantee that you’ll pass the UPCAT. Because if you don’t, I will belittle you ’till the very depths of your soul),” Farolan said.

“Ipapatikim ko sa iyo ang purong panlalait ng isang tunay na pumasa ng UPCAT at nakapagtapos ‘di lamang ng undergrad pero pati na ng law sa UP (I will let you relish the pure insult from someone who passed the UPCAT and finished both undergraduate and law degrees in UP),” he added. (Filane Mikee Cervantes/PNA)
