By Arabella Asis

During Lent, Catholics practice abstaining from eating meat for the entire Holy Week.

Fortunately, there are various delicious Filipino snacks that are easy and fun to do with your family.

Ginataang bilo-bilo

This known Filipino delicacy is made from the combination of glutinous rice balls (bilo-bilo), coconut cream, sago, coconut milk, and langka.

It’s totally meatless yet this recipe ensures a full-satisfaction experience for a snack.

Maja blanca

Also known as coconut pudding, this dessert only requires three ingredients such as coconut milk, cornstarch, and sugar.

Toppings like corn or latik are also added for better presentation and added taste.

Lumpiang sariwa

This vegetable dish is as fresh as it can get with various vegetables wrapped inside a soft wrapper. This recipe is well-paired with sweet sauce and crushed peanuts.

Sapin-sapin

A colorful treat not only for the eyes but also for the tummy! This three-layered rice cake is separated by different flavors of langka, coconut, and ube.

Biko

This sticky rice recipe with coconut milk and brown sugar is a famous Filipino merienda. Traditionally, biko is served on a banana leaf with latik on top.

Meat abstinence is a form of honoring Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. This is an opportunity for Filipinos to appreciate the delicacies of the Philippines while commemorating Holy Week. –ag
