Lucban LGU sustains ‘Trash for Rice’ program

LUCBAN, Quezon, July 24 — The local government, through Mayor Celso Olivier Dator’s initiative, is sustaining its “Trash for Rice” project complementing its “Zero Plastic” program that’s long been implemented in this town.

Mayor Dator started the “Trash for Rice” project last year, giving out one sack of rice for every five kilograms of plastic wastes found on the streets that include candy wrappers and plastic bags.

The awarding of rice is done every third Saturday of the month as part of their monthly clean-up drive where Dator joins his constituents in cleaning out canals and sweeping the streets.

“Every month, we award at least five sacks of rice to our fellow Lucbanin, grateful for their 100 percent cooperation in this advocacy,” Dator said.

The plastic trash generated in the campaign is sold to a buyer from Metro Manila. (Belinda M. Otordoz/PNA)
