Magnitude 5.7 quake jolts Surigao del Norte

MANILA — A magnitude 5.7 earthquake of tectonic origin jolted Surigao del Norte at 7:56 p.m. Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs said it is expecting aftershocks, but not expecting damages from the earthquake.

Intensity 5 was felt in Surigao City, as well as Guian and Salcedo, eastern Samar. Intensity 4 was felt in Carrascal, Surigao Del Sur; Lawaan and Giporlos, Eastern Samar; Butuan City; San Francisco, San Juan and Hinunangan, Southern Leyte; and Tolosa, Leyte.

Intensity 3 was reported in Dulag Leyte; Gingoog, Misamis Oriental; and Palo, Leyte. Intensity 2 was recorded in Hinatuan, Surigao Del Sur and in Cagayan De Oro City.
