Maguindanao grenade attack hurts 2 students

SULTAN KUDARAT, Maguindanao — Police have launched a manhunt against two teenagers suspected of tossing a hand grenade here Sunday night that injured two teenage students, police said.

Senior Supt. Madsgani Mukaram, Maguindanao provincial police director, said the Sultan Kudarat municipal police office has identified the suspects who could shed light on the incident.

Mohammad Murod, 19, and Sulayman Karim, 18, were standing beside a roadside furniture shop in Barangay Rebuken at past 10 p.m. waiting for the rains to subside when the two attackers on board a motorbike passed by.

One of them, Mukaram said, tossed a fragmentation grenade that blew off in front of the two victims. The suspects sped off as soon as the explosive went off.

Mukaram said police and neighbors rushed the victims, who both sustained serious shrapnel injuries, to the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center.

Police said personal grudge could be behind the incident, and that deeper investigation is needed to determine how the suspects managed to own a hand grenade.

“We are investigating deeper, we don’t want to speculate,” Mukaram said. (Edwin Fernandez/PNA)
