The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila resumed on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, placing ash on foreheads of faithfuls.

In a circular signed by Archdiocese of Manila Vice Chancellor Carmelo Arada Jr. stated that the archdiocese “will revert to the imposition of ashes on the forehead of the faithful.”

“The imposition of ashes is always done in the context of a liturgical celebration. It derives its meaning from the proclamation of the Word and prayers,” Arada said.

Meanwhile, priests and ministers may visit the sick and elderly for the imposition of ashes.

He also discouraged the self-imposition of ashes.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the observance of Lent, a 40-day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. – gb
