Metro Manila Council set to discuss ECQ extension in NCR

The Metro Manila Council (MMC) will hold a virtual meeting on Saturday to discuss the possible extension of the enhanced community quarantine in the National Capital Region beyond May 15.

MMC Chairman and Paraῆaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez explained the meeting aims for a unified recommendation from the 17 NCR mayors to the IATF-EID since a fragmented one would be difficult to implement. Olivarez believes another 15-day extension of the ECQ in Mega Manila is ideal.

He pointed out that mass testing is still ongoing and has only started when laboratories have opened. Based on the Department of Health’s CoVID-19 tracker, more than 6,000 of the 10,000 confirmed cases in the country are from NCR.

Meanwhile, DILG Secretary Eduardo Aῆo said it is possible that three days before May 15, new recommendations from various health experts and concerned government agencies will be laid out to the President. One of the bases for localized ECQ is the country’s capability to perform 30,000 tests per day. – Report from Patrick de Jesus
