MIAA: No flights affected in Sunday’s lightning alert

By Ma. Cristina Arayata/Philippine News Agency

MANILA — There were no delayed flights due to the red lightning alert Sunday, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) confirmed with the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

MIAA issued the red lightning alert from 12:41 p.m. to 12:55 p.m. At 12:55 p.m., this was downgraded to yellow lightning alert, which was eventually lifted at 1:12 p.m.

During red lightning alert, the ramp movement for both aircraft and ramp personnel is temporarily suspended.

It is a safety measure to prevent any untoward incident from happening when lightning is prevalent in the immediate area and may endanger passengers, personnel, and flight operations.

In the past weeks, a number of international and domestic flights were either delayed or cancelled at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), or diverted to Clark, due to red lightning alerts.

Last June 25, a ground handler at NAIA suffered injuries when lightning struck in the vicinity of the airport. He fell from the ladder while detaching ground power unit from the aircraft.
