Military intel chief is new army commander

MANILA — President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Major Gen. Macairog Alberto, commander of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP), as the next Philippine Army commander.

Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Christopher “Bong” Go on Thursday told reporters that Alberto’s appointment paper has been released to the Department of National Defense (DND).

Alberto will assume his post on Monday during the change-of-command ceremony at Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

He will replace retiring Army Chief Rolando “Rolly” Bautista who has reached the mandatory retirement age of 56.

Duterte earlier announced that he has appointed Bautista as Secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Alberto is a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1986. (Azer Parrocha/PNA)
