MMDA asks LTO to revoke bus driver’s license over mauling incident

MANILA, July 5 — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Wednesday requested the Land Transportation Office for the revocation of the license of a bus driver involved in a mauling incident in Quezon City last Monday.

MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim directed Atty. Victor Nuñes, MMDA legal counsel, to ask LTO to revoke the driver’s license of Eddie Magangcong Jr., 38, bus driver of Metro Manila Bus Corp. for assaulting MMDA enforcers who flagged him down over a traffic violation in Cubao, Quezon City.

According to Lim, Magangcong’s violent behavior toward the traffic enforcers “showed that drivers like him should not be on the road.” He added that it should also serve as a lesson to other drivers that they could not just get away with their erring ways.

Cubao Police Station personnel under Supt. Louise Benjie Tremor arrested Magangcong and Kim Lester Padilla, 22, conductor, both residents of Sampaguita St., Maligaya Park, Brgy. Pasong Putik, also in Quezon City.

They are now facing charges of direct assault upon an agent of a person in authority after they engaged MMDA traffic enforcers Roberto Supan and Rodel Abanil in a fistfight around 3:30 p.m. last July 3, 2017 along EDSA near corner P. Tuazon Blvd. in Barangay Socorro.

The MMDA personnel were directing traffic when they accosted Magangcong for unloading passengers in a ‘no loading/unloading zone’.

When asked for his driver’s license, Magangcong protested and tried to reason out. He and Padilla eventually alighted from the bus and assaulted the enforcers.

In a related development, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board issued a show cause order against Metro Manila Bus Co. Inc. to explain within five days why its franchise should not be revoked following the incident. The agency also called on the bus company to attend its hearing on July 19. (Christopher Lloyd T.
