The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Wednesday, June 22, launched a free solar charging station for electric bikes and scooters to encourage use of alternative modes of transportation amid the continuous oil price hike.
Located at the new MMDA head office building in Barangay Ugong, Pasig City, the solar charging station will be opened to the public on Monday, June 27, from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
MMDA Chairperson Atty. Romando Artes said the project would help ease the burden of the public amid the high cost of petroleum products by providing the public free service for their e-vehicles.
“Putting up free charging stations for electric vehicles such as e-bikes and e-scooters would encourage the public to use alternative modes of transportation and at the same time help them save expenses from high fuel costs,” Artes said.
Three solar panels with built-in inverters will be the main power source of the station with a total of six 220 volts charging outlets.
Artes said those who wish to charge their e-vehicles must bring their own charging cords and cables.
He added that MMDA is also planning to build a similar charging station at the agency’s headquarters in Orense, Makati to accommodate those who are traversing EDSA. – ag
