MMDA okays MRT-3 rail expansion works

MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has given its clearance for the expansion works of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) which will be done this month on a portion of the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Pasay City.

The rail adjustment works would affect the EDSA northbound traffic in Tramo area, MMDA Acting General Manager Jojo Garcia said.

“The train rails need to be fixed in preparation for the additional coaches of the MRT 3,” Garcia said after meeting with private contractor AsiaPhil last Monday.

The MRT’s expansion works seek to increase the capacity of the train rails from the existing three to four and would occupy 20-30 meters length of EDSA’s inner lane in Tramo area beside MRT wall as work area.

“We will try to retain the four to five lanes for private and public utility vehicles,” Garcia said.

The contractor assured that it will not expand their works beyond the designated area without prior notice from the MMDA. It has yet to secure clearance from the Pasay City local government before proceeding with the project.

Although the impact on traffic is expected to be minimal, the MMDA will deploy traffic enforcers in the area to avoid public inconvenience when the project starts.

The rail adjustment works are expected to last for a month. (Aerol John Pateña/PNA)
