MMDA to proceed with cases vs. couple on viral video

MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will push through its complaint against the couple, who argued with traffic enforcers after they were caught for illegal parking, despite issuing an apology last Wednesday.

“The couple already apologized publicly but still we will push through with our complaints to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and Department of Justice (DOJ),” MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia said in a text message to the Philippine News Agency (PNA) Thursday.

The MMDA has filed a complaint before the LTO seeking for the suspension or revocation of the driver’s license of the woman who was identified as a prosecutor that refused to present her driver’s license and told the enforcers she arrived within five minutes after being notified of the violation.

Her husband later appeared and explained that she was a prosecutor and has been suffering miscarriage in a video that was uploaded on Facebook last Tuesday.

DOJ Secretary Menardo Guevarra has also assured that it will take action on the complaint of the MMDA once it is filed with the department.

In a press briefing, MMDA Special Task Force Operations commander Bong Nebrija said the woman was arrogant when she was caught by the enforcers. The woman almost hit with her vehicle a traffic enforcer as she tried to drive away.

MMDA’s legal team is considering to file additional charges against the prosecutor such as violation of the number coding scheme and direct assault of the enforcers.

Garcia said the agency will continue to implement maximum tolerance among its enforcers during their operations and advised motorists that they should immediately surrender their licenses if they were caught violating traffic rules to prevent confrontations.

“Maximum tolerance among the enforcers. To the motorists in case of violation, just show your license and you will be issued a ticket then that’s it,” he said. (Aerol John Pateña/PNA)
