MMDA all set for school opening

MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will be deploying around 1,444 personnel along major roads in Metro Manila as well as areas with high density of schools in preparation for the opening of School Year 2018-2019.

Traffic personnel would be deployed at the University Belt in Manila, Katipunan Road, and Epifanio delos Santos Avenue particularly in the traffic prone areas of Cubao, Aurora and Balintawak Cloverleaf.

“Our traffic personnel shall intensify enforcement and clear obstructions near schools with large number of students,” MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said in a press briefing Thursday.

Members of the Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group and Anti-Jaywalking Unit will be deployed as early as 6 a.m. on Monday, June 4 and the succeeding days as part of the yearly Oplan Balik Eskwela which aims to ensure the smooth opening of classes.

The Metro Parkways Clearing Group have also participated in cleaning up classrooms, trimming of trees, conducting disaster preparedness and management program seminars, painting of classrooms and school buildings and declogging drainages in line with the Department of Education’s Brigada Eskwela.

“I have ordered our sector heads to report obstructions near the schools. There will be also no let-up in our clearing operations,” Garcia said.

The MMDA Traffic Engineering Center have also started installing road signs such as no parking, parking, school zone and applied thermoplastic markings on pedestrian lanes to guide motorists and students.

The MMDA Metrobase will also monitor 24/7 the traffic situation throughout the entire metropolis while the traffic enforcers will be dispatched on areas where they are mostly needed.

Agila Mobile Base, where closed circuit television cameras are installed, will be on standby and may be dispatched if necessary. (Aerol John Pateña/PNA)
