MMDA warns motorists of fake traffic enforcers

MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has warned against unscrupulous persons posing as traffic enforcers to extort money from motorists.

MMDA Acting General Manager Jojo Garcia made the statement after a bogus traffic enforcer issued a fake traffic violation ticket to a motorist he apprehended for reckless driving violation along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (Edsa).

The motorist, who hails from Mandaluyong City, was supposed to redeem last Monday his driver’s license nconfiscated by the supposed enforcer but later learned that the traffic citation issued to him was fake.

“The agency does not have the motorist driver’s license. The person who apprehended him was not a legitimate traffic enforcer of the agency,” Garcia told a press conference Tuesday.

In his complaint, the motorist claimed that the traffic enforcer was wearing the agency’s uniform when he was apprehended.

MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim has ordered an investigation into the matter.

The agency reminded motorists to ask for the traffic enforcer’s mission order indicating official functions, place of assignment and time of duty.

“It is the responsibility of the traffic enforcer to carry his mission order at all times. If he does not bear his mission order, he is unauthorized,” Garcia said.

A traffic enforcer cannot confiscate a driver’s license for a traffic violation except when the motorist is involved in a road accident.

Garcia also urged the public to report dubious traffic enforcers who taint the image of the agency.

“Motorists have the right to ask for the mission order, signed by their traffic sector heads,” he said. (Aerol John Pateña/PNA)
