MANILA – A total of 13 flights (10 domestic, 3 international) were delayed due to the lightning alert at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Tuesday night.

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) announced the red lightning alert at 7:13 p.m. which was lowered to yellow alert at 7:41 p.m.

The lightning alert was lifted at 8:34 p.m.

During a red lightning alert, the ramp movement for both aircraft and ramp personnel is temporarily suspended.

It is a safety measure to prevent any untoward incident from happening when lightning is prevalent in the immediate area and may endanger passengers, personnel, and flight operations.

Last June 25, a ground handler at NAIA suffered injuries when lightning struck in the vicinity of the airport. He fell from the ladder while detaching ground power unit from the aircraft.
