NDRRMC urges LGUs to prepare for ‘Bagyong Ambo’

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has urged the Local Government Units (LGUs) to prepare for the possible effect of “Bagyong Ambo” on the country.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) expects “Bagyong Ambo” to bring light to moderate rainfall which may increase chances of floods, landslides, and even storm surges.

The NDRRMC has strictly reminded that schools may not be used as evacuation centers since they are being used as quarantine facilities for Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Spokesperson Mark Timbal suggests that LGUs may use alternatives such as multi-purpose halls, covered courts or dedicated evacuation facilities. He also added that health protocols must still be implemented in times of evacuation.

“It’s a unique situation kasi this is the first time that we’re going to face a natural hazard like bagyo na mayroon talagang dapat na consideration sa pandemic situation. (It’s a unique situation because it is the first time that we’re going to face a natural hazard like a storm while taking into consideration a pandemic situation).”

OCD Spokesperson Mark Timbal has also assured that the government has on standby more than PhP 200 million for calamities.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has also reserved food packs and non-food essentials in case of emergencies. – Report from Bea Bernardo
