Nearly 200 deaths recorded in Cebu in January

A total of 193 individuals died due to COVID-19 in both public and private hospitals in Cebu during the month of January this year.

According to the Department of Health in Region 7 (DOH 7), 78 deaths were recorded in private hospitals and 115 in public hospitals as of Jan. 31, 2022.

Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, chief pathologist of DOH 7, said 74.1% or 143 of the fatalities are unvaccinated individuals.  Most of those who succumbed to the disease also had comorbidities.

“But if you compare it with the Delta driver surge, the death cases right now is much lesser,” Loreche said, adding that those recently admitted “are COVID-19 positive”, or were “diagnosed with COVID because they were admitted with other illnesses.”

“Most of them had comorbidities, so usually they had an unconsulted hypertension, and stroke. That’s their usual presentation,” she said.

The number of active cases in the city is down by 5.9%, or from 7,429 to 6,985. At least 481 recoveries have been recorded and the positivity rate is around 26.73%.

Meanwhile, Cebu City Emergency Operations Center chief Councilor Joel Garganera said they have experienced a decrease in their positivity rate in the past 10 days, together with the reported daily cases. – Report from John Aroa/AG
