DUMAGUETE CITY — The National Food Authority (NFA) in Negros Oriental has assured that there is enough buffer stock of government rice to last through December this year.

NFA-Negros Oriental manager Hilaria Ganzon gave the assurance as the grains agency started Wednesday its “Bigasan sa NFA Compound” here, to make government rice, which is more affordable than commercial rice, easily available to the public.

According to her, there is no shortage of rice here and in fact, unloading of imported rice is ongoing in nearby Cebu following the arrival of two vessels.

“Ang atoang madawat from June until December, naka schedule ta ug 250,000 bags, (from June to December, we are calendared to receive 250,000 bags),” Ganzon noted.

To date, the NFA here has received 81,000 bags of imported rice, she said, adding that the balance will be delivered to Negros Oriental all throughout the coming months until December.

The available rice on hand, meanwhile, as of latest inventory, is 12,000 bags, Ganzon said.

She noted that a shipment of 33,000 bags of rice is expected any time next week.

Hopefully, there will be good weather so that the rice shipment intended for Negros Oriental will be delivered from Cebu as scheduled, Ganzon said. (Mary Judaline Partlow/PNA)
