No tsunami threat to PH after Papua New Guinea quake – Phivolcs

There is no threat of a tsunami affecting the Philippines following a 6.5-magnitude earthquake that jolted Papua New Guinea early Monday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

State seismologists said that “no destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data,” according to a tsunami advisory issued 5:12 a.m.

The powerful temblor struck southeast of the island of New Britain, Papua New Guinea around 4:57 a.m. and had a depth of 81 kilometers.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), meanwhile, put the epicenter of the tremor at “roughly 110 km east-southeast” of Kimbe with a depth of 49 km.

According to Agence France-Presse, a magnitude 6.9 quake last month killed about five people and destroyed at least 1,000 homes in the country. (with a report from Agence France-Presse)
