Over 400 students may lose merit scholarship with “pass all” policy

Data from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) disclosed that 424 students are at risk of losing their merit scholarship due to the non-issuance of numerical grades amid the “pass all” policy of some institutions.

“Ito iyong scholarship na based purely on grade… Kung hindi sila bibigyan ng numeric grade ng kanilang pamantasan, walang basehan iyong Komisyon na i-evaluate kung sila ay dapat magpatuloy sa scholarship dahil hindi mako-compute iyong kanilang general weighted average (This scholarship is purely based on grade…If they are not given numeric grades by their university, the Commission will not have basis to evaluate if they can continue with the scholarship since their general weighted average cannot be computed),” CHED Chairman J. Prospero de Vera III explained.

Php 40,000 and Php 20,000 worth of assistance are granted by the CHED to students whose GWA is not lower the 85 percent and 80 percent, respectively.

The CHED has already written to the 17 higher education institutions that implemented such policy to expedite the issuance of grades to the scholars. The colleges and universities were given until October 30 to evaluate the grade of scholars.
