LAOAG CITY — Another batch of fishing gears is being prepared for distribution to selected fisherfolk beneficiaries at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena here Friday, January 12.
Vanessa Abegail Dagdagan of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said Thursday that various fishing paraphernalia and post-harvest equipment worth PHP2.48 million would be awarded to at least 23 associations composed of 396 fisherfolk beneficiaries in the coastal municipalities of the province.
Specifically, the post harvest equipment include eight standard model fish stalls; 75 cooler boxes; 25 deboning kits; and 10 stainless tables.
Meanwhile, the fishing gears include four units of payao; 80 gill nets; 200 life vests; and 30 set-long lines.
In support of the national government’s program on food security and sustainable fisheries management, BFAR continues to distribute fishing livelihood materials to fisher folk beneficiaries, particularly those affected by previous typhoons.
The BFAR hopes that by empowering the marginalized fishermen, they will no longer resort to illegal fishing and other means of illegal activities.
In 2017, Ilocos Norte fishermen who were members of accredited fisher folk organizations here were able to receive more than PHP23.5 million worth of fishery livelihood projects courtesy of BFAR. (PNA)
