P2.8M worth of dangerous drugs burned in La Union

SAN FERNANDO CITY, September 13 (PIA) – Confiscated dangerous drugs with an estimated value of P2.8 million, based on the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), were destroyed in a ceremonial burning recently at the Marangal Grandstand of the Camp Diego Silang, Carlatan, this city.

According to Attorney Marvin O. Tavares, assistant regional director of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Region 1, the burning of these dangerous drugs which were turned over by the different courts in the region is part of the activities for the National Crime Prevention Week celebration.

“Regardless of the decision of our courts in these cases, we are still victorious in our anti-drug efforts since we are able to stop the distribution of these dangerous drugs in our community,” Tavares said.

Tavares said that all the confiscated drugs which comprised of 321.77 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu with an estimated value of P1,940,246.20 and 11,730.06 grams of dried marijuana valued at P889,182.48, which are used as evidence in courts, were destroyed in accordance with the law.

Representing La Union Governor Francisco Emmanuel R. Ortega, Vice Governor Augusto Aureo Q. Nisce said that “crime prevention is the utmost priority of the provincial government of La Union. The ceremonial burning will further unify our efforts and strengthen our resolve in the fight against illegal drugs.”

“The provincial government’s anti-illegal drug transformative roadmap was behind to neutralize illegal drug demand and supply,” Nisce said.

The ceremonial burning was led by PDEA Region 1 Director Geoffrey C. Tacio along with key officials from various government agencies and select civil society organization and media representative. (JNPD/MPA/PIA-1, La Union)
