PAL aircraft causes Dumaguete Airport runway closure

MANILA — Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight PR2541 (Manila-to Dumaguete) experienced tire issues shortly after landing at the Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport, in Negros Oriental at dawn Tuesday, causing closure of the airport’s runway 09.

According to CAAP, PAL flight PR2541 left Manila at 5:14 a.m. Tuesday and while landing at Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport runway 09, the plane experienced tire failure, damaging the left main gear of its rubber tires, at 6:31 a.m.

All flight passengers were deplaned safely, CAAP said.

CAAP immediately issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) because of the incident.

“The airport can still accommodate small aircraft like Cessna or trainer planes because these only require small portion of the runway. Commercial aircraft cannot be accommodated while the runway is closed,” CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio told the Philippine News Agency.

As of 11 a.m., Apolonio said airport authorities are still waiting for the PAL aircraft to be towed. “We will announce and will cancel the NOTAM once this is fixed,” he added.

The runway closure led Manila International Airport Authority to cancel the following flights:
PAL Express (2P) 2542 Dumaguete-Manila
2P 2545/2546 Manila-Dumaguete-Manila
Cebu Pacific (5J) 625/626 Manila-Dumaguete-Manila
5J 629/630 Manila-Dumaguete-Manila

Other 5J and CebGo flights are expected to be delayed due to runway closure, CAAP said. (Ma. Cristina Arayata/PNA)
