Palace: Gov’t is monitoring situation of Filipinos abroad

Malacañang has reiterated its support for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) affected by the COVID-19 pandemic

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the government is also monitoring the situation of OFWs outside the country aside from the assistance it is giving to those who have already been repatriated.

He disclosed that the government has chartered an airplane to pick up Filipinos who lost their jobs in Hong Kong.

He added that the reported case of OFWs selling their blood to have food after losing employment in Saudi Arabia is being investigated.

“Pinaimbestigahan na po iyan sa ating LABATT o iyong Labor Attaché natin as we speak. At minamabuti po natin na makarating pati po iyong mga ayuda na binibigay natin sa mga OFWs natin na hindi makauwi dahil sa lockdown pero nawalan na po ng trabaho gaya sa mga lugar ng Saudi Arabia (LABBAT or our labor attaché has been ordered to investigate as we speak. And we are ensuring that the aid will be given to OFWs who cannot go home due to lockdown and have lost their jobs such as those in Saudi Arabia),” Roque said.
