DOTr preps guidelines for jeepneys

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is now fast-tracking the creation of guidelines and routes for jeepneys.

“Like for example ‘yong mga jeepney na dati plying ito ‘yong Monumento to Taft Ave. via Rizal Ave. Extension, Rizal Ave. tapos tatawid ng Sta. Cruz bridge papuntang Taft Ave., jeepney routes dati ‘yan. Ngayon nilagay natin ng bus, so wala nang jeep doon (For example, jeeps used to ply the Monumento to Taft Ave. via Rizal Ave. Extension, and Rizal Ave. crossing Sta. Cruz going to Taft Ave. These were old jeepney routes but we placed buses. So there should be no more jeepneys there.),” DOTr consultant Bert Suansing said.

“Initially, ano na lang ‘yong pwedeng possible na maging ruta nila? For example sa Maynila, may mga ruta talaga ng jeepney doon, like for example ‘yong sa Divisoria, mga ganyan, ‘yong sa may Tayuman ‘yan,” (Initially, what will be the possible routes for them? In Manila, there are jeepney routes such as Divisoria and Tayuman),” Suansing added.

Jeepneys may still follow the pickup and drop off system but not all will be allowed to travel as the LTFRB is now formulating the selection process guidelines. Social distancing measures, wearing of face masks, and gloves for collecting fares will be included.

The DOTr clarified that the PUV modernization program is ongoing. The deadline has been extended to December 30.

Meanwhile, operations of the UV Express may resume next week but the point-to-point scheme will be observed. – Report from Karen Villanda
