Palace respects Con-com move to regulate, not ban political dynasties

MANILA — Malacañang on Monday said it respects and defers to the recommendation of the Consultative Committee (Con-com) to regulate political dynasties instead of banning them.

“I think the sentiment of the President himself, he doesn’t consider political dynasty as bad per se. He has said sometimes it can lead to good results but we respect and defer to the wisdom of the Con-com,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a Palace media briefing.

President Rodrigo Duterte’s daughter, Sara, is the incumbent Davao City mayor, while his son, Paolo, served as vice mayor.

Before he won overwhelmingly in the May 2016 presidential elections, Duterte was mayor of Davao City for over two decades.

The Con-com, which is tasked by Duterte to review the 1987 Constitution, voted 10-9 on Monday to recommend the regulation of political dynasties instead of totally prohibiting them.

The committee has also reportedly agreed to insert a self-executing provision covering relatives up to the second degree of consanguinity.

“We hope that Congress will consider this particular recommendation,” Roque said. (PNA)
