CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga — The city government has lined up various activities on disaster preparedness and mitigation as part of its continuing campaign towards building disaster-resilient communities.
Mayor Edwin Santiago cited the need to be always vigilant and ready in times of calamities.
“Nabubuhay tayo sa pamamagitan ng regalo ng kalikasan, ang tubig, hangin, at mga puno, pero hindi natin hahayaang dito sa syudad, kalikasan din ang magiging dahilan upang mawala ang ating buhay. Kaya ang mga kalamidad, ating pinaghahandaan (We are living through the gifts of nature, water, air and tree. But, we will not let the nature to become the cause of losing our lives. That’s why, we are preparing for those calamities),” he said.
The mayor, together with city disaster risk reduction and management officer Raymond Del Rosario, led on Monday the presentation of the activities for the city’s observance of National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM).
The NDRM is an annual activity, which aims to spread awareness on disaster resilience through several activities about disaster prevention and mitigation; disaster preparedness; disaster response; and disaster rehabilitation and recovery.
The city’s NDRM observance will kick-off on July 6 with a motorcade and thanksgiving mass at SM Telabastagan and Metropolitan Cathedral of San Fernando, respectively.
On July 10, the Sining Kahandaan Year 5: poster making contest will take place at the Benigno S. Aquino Hall, Capitol Compound; and on July 16 to 17, a basic disaster preparedness seminar for women will be conducted.
There will be a three-day activity on City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office’s (CDRRMO) emergency response capability-static display on July 18 to 20 at Vista Mall Pampanga; and disaster preparedness and capability building for accredited community disaster volunteers (ACDVs) and schools on July 24 to 26.
A fire and earthquake drill will be conducted on July 26 at the City Hall while a run for a cause, called “SAFRUN” will be staged on July 29 at the Heroes Hall Compound.
The NDRM observance will culminate on August 1, through community disaster volunteer’s capability assessment, which marks its fourth year. (Ric Sapnu/PNA)
