Parts of Roxas Blvd closed to traffic for INC charity walk on May 6

MANILA — Parts of Roxas Boulevard will be closed to traffic for the Iglesia Ni Cristo’s Worldwide Walk to Fight Poverty on May 6, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said Tuesday.

The agency said the northbound and southbound lanes of Roxas Boulevard between Buendia and Padre Burgos will be shut down starting on May 5 at 12 midnight until 10 p.m. of May 6.

The charity walk will be traversing Quirino Grandstand, Luneta Park, the vicinity of Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex, parts of Diosdado Macapagal Avenue, Buendia Avenue, Taft Avenue and Road 10.

MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said that around a million people are expected to participate in the event,

“We need the cooperation of the public. Stay away from Roxas Boulevard and some areas in Manila and Pasay if you do not have any business or anything important to do there,” Garcia said in a statement.

The MMDA will deploy 200 personnel consisting of traffic enforcers, road emergency group and roadside clearing group to guide motorists, help maintain peace and order, and do post-activity cleanup in the area.

The agency has also coordinated with the cities of Manila and Pasay to help manage traffic and ensure the safety of the participants.

For his part, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Undersecretary for Road Transport Tim Orbos advised the participants to use the Metro Rail Transit, Light Rail Transit and Philippine National Railways in going to the venue to avoid being caught in heavy traffic.

“We urge them not to bring their vehicles and just park their vehicles away from the venue,” Orbos said.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board will be giving special trips to passenger buses to ferry the participants, Orbos said. (Aerol John Pateña/PNA)
