President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday said he will endorse the “best” candidate in the 2028 presidential race who can continue his administration’s legacy.

“I will certainly endorse a candidate in the 2028 elections,” he said during the presidential luncheon hosted by the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines at Diamond Hotel Philippines in Manila.

“We will choose the best possible candidate who will continue what we have started, and who will bring even new and hopefully even better initiatives to the development of our country.”

President Marcos Jr., however, said it is still too early to identify the possible standard-bearer of his political party, Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP).

He said he could not name a potential candidate because he has yet to determine who would be best suited to succeed him.

“Who that is, I cannot tell you because even I don’t know. So, paano ba? It’s a little early for that. And we don’t know. We only have that so far. We have only one person who has put their hand in the ring. So, that’s a very, very early one in the process,” Marcos said.

The President said the PFP would work with other political parties and consider whether to field joint candidates or its own slate.

He said pre-election surveys are “interesting” but may not be particularly useful at this stage.

“And there are so many political events that are still going to happen between now and that time. And so, it’s very hard for me to, for myself, even to make a decision,” Marcos Jr. said.

Marcos Jr. also said he has not yet spoken with anyone to ask whether they plan to run for president.

“The time will come,” he said.
