President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. underscored on Thursday the need to create conditions for diplomatic solutions to the threats posed by the nuclear weapons in the conflict in Ukraine and the recent surge of ballistic missile tests by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
In his intervention during the 18th East Asia (EAS) Summit, President Marcos expressed the concern of the Philippines over the “buildup of rising powers in global weapon stockpiles,” which pose “undue dangers to global peace and security.”
“We call on DPRK to fully comply with all relevant UN Security Council resolutions towards the realization of lasting peace and stability in a denuclearized Korean Peninsula,” President Marcos told the 18th EAS Summit attended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present along with Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, South Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol, US Vice President Kamala Harris, and other world leaders.
“The Philippines firmly believes that it is now necessary to create conditions for a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Ukraine. We call on all countries to play a constructive role in contributing to this endeavor, particularly our partners,” he added.
President Marcos emphasized that the Philippines has consistently reaffirmed the country’s support for the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, especially of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence, with respect to the conflict in Ukraine and other areas of concern.
The chief executive also emphasized that the Philippines continues to call for complete implementation of the Five-Point Consensus, reiterating support for the Special Envoy of ASEAN in pushing the Consensus forward.
The President stood firm that the inclusive participation of all parties is required in the constructive dialogue called for by the Five-Point Consensus.
“We maintain that endeavors by other parties to address the crisis should support and complement ASEAN’s efforts, and should be done in consultation with the ASEAN Chair,” he added.
President Marcos is in Jakarta, Indonesia attending the 43rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits. PND
