The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployed its largest maritime asset, the BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701), to the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) as part of its strengthened maritime activities in the West Philippine Sea.

This is in response to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s order to boost the PCG’s presence in the area.

Fisherfolks have been advised by the vessel’s crew since its deployment on January 28 to radio the PCG or the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) if they need assistance.

The PCG is also anticipating a summer surge of Filipino fishing vessels in the West Philippine Sea.

Recently, BRP Teresa Magbanua issued radio challenges to a Vietnamese fishing vessel in the waters off Recto Bank and directed it to immediately leave the area. It also deployed Rigid-hull Inflatable Boats for boarding and inspection.

“As the PCG steadily strengthens and increases its Maritime Patrol, Search and Rescue, and Law Enforcement operations in the WPS, it remains firmly committed to safeguarding Philippine interests and rights within the bounds of international law and conventions,” the PCG said in a press release.

It added that it remains committed to Commandant CG Admiral Artemio Abu’s call that “the PCG’s men and women will always be prepared to fulfill our obligations not only to the present but also to the future generations of Filipinos to the fullest” despite the West Philippine Sea patrolling dangers. – Katrina Gracia Consebido-ag
